The Government’s Education White Paper announced an end to the traditional form of parent governors, in a move which has been criticised by some commentators.
It said that parent governors would no longer be elected by other parents to serve on governing bodies.
However, the White Paper praised the role that parents play and called for parents to continue to work as governors if selected based on their skills.
The move was linked to a greater emphasis on skills-based appointments and it came as the Government also announced other changes including a new database of governors, which would also allow people who were deemed unsuitable to be barred from being a governor.
