16th March 2016

Dr Andreas Schleicher, Director of Education at the OECD, talked about the need for the curriculum in England to encourage deeper thinking among pupils.

Dr Schleicher said that while England came near the middle of many comparison measures in OECD countries, there was not enough detail in aspects of the maths curriculum. This contrasted with the highest achieving East Asian countries and some in Europe.

He added that although sport was often seen as a way of developing pupils’ character, maths could help teach character in schools.

Dr Schleicher was speaking at the Global Education Forum in Dubai which took place from March 12th to 13th.
