MidYIS is a computer-adaptive assessment for pupils aged 11 to 14, that provides information to help you identify pupils strengths and weaknesses, and predict how students are likely to perform at (I)GCSE (Scotland National 3, 4 and 5 qualifications). Value-added data from MidYIS shows you the progress your children are making, and helps you see the impact your teaching is having.
MidYIS assesses four key areas which research shows are linked to later academic outcomes:
As the assessment is adaptive, each student sees a unique assessment and is challenged at a level that is suitable for them, making it enjoyable, engaging, and efficient.
The MidYIS assessment is typically carried out at the start of the school year and takes approximately 50 minutes, fitting into a standard lesson. Alternatively MidYIS can be carried out in June/July at the end of the preceding school year to help with planning ahead of the new school year.
Each child completes the assessment independently, working at a computer meaning it can be carried out with as many pupils you can cater for in one sitting.
Every school has their own secure account through which they access the assessment and results. The assessment can be completed online using the secure web shortcut, or downloaded to the local network or computer. We provide step by step guidance to help you set-up and run the assessment.
Results are available to download from the secure website within 48 hours, and there is no need for teacher marking or manual data entry.
MidYIS can help you recognise student and cohort strengths and weaknesses, and identify gifted students or those in need of extra support. Reports include:
We keep a close eye on the progress our pupils make throughout school. The MidYIS Chances Graphs help us see how likely it is that a student will achieve certain grades at GCSE, so we can plan appropriate support for each child to help them achieve the best they can.
What we know about each child when they join us is often limited, and MidYIS is a great way of helping us quickly find out what level every child is working at. It also helps give us an idea about their longer term academic potential, and to see where extra support is needed.
The information we get from MidYIS plays an important part in helping us raise the aspirations of our students, helping them grow in confidence. We share the results with students and their parents, and the reports help us to set targets for each student that are both motivational and realistic.
The value-added information we get from MidYIS helps us see what is, and isn’t working. We look at the data across the whole school and it helps us to share best practice between departments.
We do the MidYIS assessment every June with Year 6 pupils (our new Year 7 intake), as it allows us to get an idea of what each child can do before they start with us in September. This enables us to have conversations about plans and resources for the start of term.
