Describing differences in attainment as a north-south divide is too simplistic, according to the independent research organisation, education data lab.

Researchers at the organisation pointed out that the north east was the highest achieving region when looking at the results of contextual value added data.

They added in their blog that variation within regions was more significant than differences between them and they encouraged anyone looking at research findings to consider the wider context of schools.
