Toby Salt, the chief executive of Ormiston Academies Trust and Amanda Spielman, Chair of Ofqual and education adviser to Ark Schools have been named as possible successors to Sir Michael Wilshaw.

The Times Educational Supplement reported that a number of candidates were being considered but suggested that Professor Salt and Ms Spielman were the front runners after the first round of interviews.

Other candidates being considered are believed to include Russell Hobby, general secretary of heads’ union the NAHT, and Joel Klein, the former New York city schools commissioner, together with Dame Alison Peacock, Regional Schools Commissioner.
